Due to a generous grant from the Bob Barker Foundation, Lift Your Gaze completed the Spanish translation of our devotional.
THE IMPACT OF HOPE TO SEVERAL HUNDRED INMATES FROM THIS GRANT HAS BEEN LIFE-CHANGING TO SEVERAL HUNDRED INMATES ACROSS THE CONTRY.
Here's one story...
Emely’s eyes welled up as soon as she saw me. As she pulled off her glasses, the tears started rolling down her cheeks. She collapsed into one of the plastic chairs and held her face. Her shoulders convulsed with each sob. As she covered her face, her nose ran into her paper mask. The sound of her cries reverberated off the concrete walls and tile floor.
I wanted to wrap my arms around her, whisper sweet prayers of comfort into her ear, and hug her tight. Unfortunately, all physical contact is strictly prohibited. She is an inmate; I am a volunteer. Her sobs increased. The chaplain’s eyes became wet as she shook her head in empathy.
“Just let it all out,” I responded softly. My heart ached for her. I had mentored, taught, and prayed for Emely for over two years during her incarceration at the county jail. I received regular updates on her from the chaplain and some of the other ladies during my sixteen-month absence due to COVID. I felt like I was witnessing one of my sisters melting down in front of me, and I was utterly helpless. I sighed as a deep weight pressed upon my heart.
I did what I always do when I’m at the end of myself. I raised a hand and prayed over her with such deep fervor that my voice shook. My words echoed throughout the large atrium. I prayed until I felt the Holy Spirit pour down upon her. Then after several minutes of prayer, she took a deep breath. She looked up at me with swollen red eyes.
“I’ve missed you,” she croaked out in broken English.
The chaplain translated as Emely updated me on her stalled case, her concern over her children, and her struggles to meet her bail criteria after three years. She also shared her desire to enter into ministry with me upon her release.
I looked up through the glass windows to all the ladies in their bunks. “This is your mission field, Emely. Go, share the Word of God with them. Start a book study with my book. Lead the masses to Christ.”
She nodded and told the chaplain in Spanish that she was now discipling four women in her dorm. I encouraged her and told her she needed to increase her group size. She nodded.
Her English comprehension had decreased since the cancellation of all the ministry programs due to the mandatory facility lockdown. I told her I was working on translating my book and devotional into Spanish and asked her to pray for the initiative.
Emely started to cry again and spoke rapid Spanish to the chaplain. Painstakingly, the chaplain translated Emely’s heart and how vital my books and devotionals were to Emely and the other women. She said they were like a lifeline, and they desperately needed to be in Spanish. Wiping her eyes with her palms, she told me that she wanted to contribute to our translation initiative when she got out of jail. I almost broke down into sobs myself.
